If you have been searching for a good chiropractor in Springfield, VA, you already know the problem: there are a lot of options, and it is not always easy to tell who is actually going to help you versus who is just going to crack your back and send you home with a receipt.

I am Dr. Josh Alvarado, and I have been practicing chiropractic care in the Springfield area since opening Spinal Health Group at 5413 Backlick Road. Before that, I trained in health and exercise science, sports medicine, and went on to earn my Doctor of Chiropractic degree from New York Chiropractic College. I have also completed postgraduate training in acupuncture through the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture.

How to Find a Good Chiropractor in Springfield

I built this practice from the ground up because I wanted to do chiropractic care differently. So when people ask me how to find a good chiropractor, I take that question personally. Here are eight signs — based on what I believe makes a real difference in patient outcomes — that tell you whether you have found the right one.

1. They Examine You Before They Touch You

A Good Chiropractor Earns the Right to Adjust You

This is the sign I feel most strongly about. A good chiropractor does not walk into the room, ask you where it hurts, and immediately start adjusting. That is not care — that is guesswork.

Before any treatment begins at Spinal Health Group, I perform a detailed consultation and movement-based examination. I want to understand how your joints are moving, where the restriction is, what muscles are compensating, and how your nervous system is responding. That information directly shapes everything I do for you.

The examination is not a formality. It is the most important part of your first visit. If a chiropractor skips it or rushes through it, that tells you a lot about how the rest of your care will go.

2. They Explain What They Found and What They Are Going to Do

Transparency Is Non-Negotiable

After your exam, a good chiropractor should be able to explain your findings clearly, in plain language. Not just "your spine is out of alignment" — that tells you nothing. I mean a real explanation: which joints are restricted, why that is likely contributing to your symptoms, what treatment I am recommending, and why.

At Spinal Health Group, I make a point of walking every new patient through what I found during their exam before treatment begins. You should never feel like things are being done to you without understanding why. If you ever leave a chiropractic office unsure of what your diagnosis is or why you were treated a certain way, that is a problem.

3. They Build a Care Plan Around You, Not Around a Formula

Personalized Care Is the Standard, Not the Exception

There is a version of chiropractic care where every patient gets the same routine: come in three times a week for twelve weeks, get adjusted, repeat. I understand why some practices operate that way. It is efficient. But it is not good care.

Every patient who walks into Spinal Health Group has a different history, a different body, different goals, and a different threshold for what counts as success. A 28-year-old runner recovering from a hip injury has completely different needs than a 55-year-old desk worker dealing with chronic neck pain or a pregnant woman in her third trimester managing pelvic discomfort.

A good chiropractor listens to what you want out of care, not just what your chief complaint is, and builds a plan accordingly. That plan should evolve as you progress — not stay fixed because it is easier to leave it alone.

4. They Have More Than One Tool

The Adjustment Is a Starting Point, Not the Whole Story

Chiropractic adjustments are effective. I use them every single day and believe deeply in what they do for joint function, nerve health, and pain relief. But for most of the conditions I treat — herniated discs, sciatica, chronic back pain, sports injuries, tight muscles and trigger points — the adjustment alone is rarely enough to get the best results.

At Spinal Health Group, I combine chiropractic care with dry needling, acupuncture, soft tissue therapy, instrument-assisted mobilization, spinal decompression, and corrective exercise. The reason I invested in this range of tools is simple: different problems require different solutions. A chiropractor who only adjusts is like a mechanic who only uses one wrench.

When you consult with a chiropractor, pay attention to whether they ask enough questions to understand your full picture, or whether they are already moving toward the same treatment they give everyone. A good chiropractor should be able to explain specifically why they are recommending what they are recommending for you.

5. They Offer Both Manual and Instrument Adjusting

A Good Chiropractor Adapts to You, Not the Other Way Around

Some patients love the traditional manual adjustment. Others are uncomfortable with the idea of twisting or the popping sound, or they have a history that makes standard manipulation less appropriate — post-surgical patients, elderly patients, very acute injuries, or hypermobile joints.

A good chiropractor should be able to meet you where you are. At Spinal Health Group, I offer both manual chiropractic adjustments and low-force instrument adjusting using the Activator Method and Arthrostim. These instrument-based techniques deliver a precise, controlled impulse without any cracking or twisting. They are equally effective and considerably more comfortable for patients who need that approach.

If you ask a chiropractor whether they offer alternatives to manual adjusting and they tell you it is their way or the highway, that is worth noting.

6. They Are Honest About What Chiropractic Can and Cannot Do

Integrity Matters More Than a Full Schedule

This one is harder to evaluate before your first visit, but it becomes clear quickly. A good chiropractor should be honest with you — even when that honesty means telling you that chiropractic care is not the right solution for your problem.

I refer patients out regularly. If your imaging or examination suggests something that needs an orthopedist, a neurologist, or another specialist, I am going to tell you that. Keeping you in my office when you need a different kind of care is not good for you and it is not something I am willing to do.

A good chiropractor also does not promise things that cannot be guaranteed. I cannot promise you that your herniated disc will be 100 percent resolved. What I can promise is an honest assessment, a well-reasoned treatment plan, and a clear conversation about your realistic prognosis based on what I find in your exam.

7. They Treat the Cause, Not Just the Symptom

Pain Is a Signal, Not the Problem Itself

A lot of people come into Spinal Health Group after spending months treating their symptoms with ice, rest, and over-the-counter pain relief — and getting temporary results at best. That is because symptoms are the warning light, not the engine problem.

Good chiropractic care traces the pain back to its source. A patient with recurring headaches might have a movement restriction in the cervical spine that is irritating the nerves feeding into the base of the skull. A patient with hip pain might have a sacroiliac joint issue or a piriformis problem that is referring pain into the hip. Treating the hip without addressing the source is going to produce limited, temporary results.

This is why the examination matters so much. It is what allows me to distinguish between where the pain is and where it is coming from — which are often different places. See all the conditions we treat at Spinal Health Group.

8. You Leave Feeling Like a Person, Not a Patient Number

The Right Practice Feels Like the Right Fit

This last one is harder to quantify but easier to feel. When you walk into the right chiropractic office, the experience is different. You are not rushed in and out. Your questions get real answers, not scripted ones. You feel like the person caring for you has actually read your chart and remembers who you are.

Spinal Health Group is a locally owned, family-run practice in Springfield, VA. My wife and I built this from scratch in the community we live in. We are not a franchise. We are not a high-volume volume shop where you see a different provider every visit. When you come in, you see me. I know your history. I know what we talked about last time. And I am invested in your outcome the same way I would be if you were a neighbor — which, if you are in Springfield, Burke, Alexandria, Annandale, or anywhere in Northern Virginia, you very likely are.

So, How Do You Know You Have Found the Right Chiropractor?

Here is the short version:

  • They examine you thoroughly before treating you

  • They explain what they found in plain language

  • They build a plan around your specific situation

  • They have multiple tools and know when to use each one

  • They offer options for patients who prefer gentler techniques

  • They are honest about what chiropractic can and cannot do

  • They address the root cause, not just the symptoms

  • They make you feel like a person, not a number

If your chiropractor checks all of those boxes, you are in good hands. If you are still looking for that practice in the Springfield area, I would be glad to show you what this kind of care actually looks like in person.
